2009
We were born during the digital boom+
We started as Alterno Media in 2009, when platforms like Google, Facebook, and Twitter—along with websites and blogs—were beginning to change the way advertising and marketing were done. Many brands wanted to enter the digital world, but didn’t always know where to start. R. Luquis, a sociologist by training and a technology enthusiast, already had years of experience in sales, marketing, and digital media when he decided to create an agency to help them.

The Early Years
We learned by doing+
Between 2009 and 2015, we worked primarily with advertising agencies and did not yet have a significant portfolio of direct clients. More than 20 agencies hired us as digital partners to support their clients, which allowed us to participate—through them—in projects spanning dozens of brands, industries, budgets, and challenges.

2014
We are now Alterno Agency
We became a full-service advertising and digital marketing agency. Our clients began asking us for more: ideas, strategies, creativity, branding, content, landing pages, websites, audiovisual production, campaigns, media, SEO/SEM, and much more. So we brought together services and talent to manage projects from start to finish.

2019
We're changing the way we operate+
We’re beginning the transition to a more remote, digital, and flexible model, collaborating with specialized talent from San Juan, Caguas, Villalba, Ponce, Miami, Colorado, and even India. But remote doesn’t mean distant: we continue to visit clients, hold meetings, and carry out production wherever the project requires it.

Today
Full service, but digital first
Since 2020, we have intentionally focused on serving fewer clients in order to offer a comprehensive digital service, from start to finish. We combine strategy, creativity, content, digital advertising, web development, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, automation, and data, while delving deeper into specific industries and needs. Today, we maintain relationships that span more than a decade, including one with the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico.

Founder
R. Luquis
A Puerto Rican sociologist and digital marketer with more than 20 years of experience in digital media and brand development.
A graduate in Sociology from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, with master's studies in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, he founded Alterno in 2009. Since then, he has led digital strategy, advanced web development, and advertising projects for Puerto Rican and international brands across multiple industries.
His perspective combines human behavior, strategy, creativity, and technology. Outside the agency, he is a husband and father of three, and he writes from Santurce about advertising, technology, business, family, and other topics that shape his perspective.
