Retargeting: Strategy and Psychology for Greater Impact

Retargeting is key to staying top-of-mind with consumers. We explain how it works, why it’s effective, and how user psychology plays an essential role in achieving results without making your brand seem intrusive.

A Visual Overview of Retargeting Across Audiences, Ads, and Conversion Points

The ad that finds you again

The story of the cruise you'll never forget…

You're casually browsing the web and looking for information about a Disney cruise vacation. You close the page… and 15 minutes later, boom!: You start seeing ads for cruises, deals on flights to Miami, family packages, and Disney promotions everywhere.

The days go by, and that idea keeps popping into your head. You change the subject, and now you’re looking for Pilates classes… and now, all the ads are for yoga, Pilates, and workout clothes.

It's not magic, nor witchcraft, nor a coincidence; it's retargeting, one of the most effective (and technically complex) strategies in digital marketing.

What Is Retargeting?

This technique allows you to re-engage users who have already interacted with your brand in some way: they visited your website, viewed a product, added something to their cart and left (abandoned cart), or interacted with your content or emails.

The goal is to remind them of your brand, guide them through their decision-making process, and maximize the chances of conversion.

How Does Retargeting Work? (The Technical Side)

The essence of retargeting is tracking users through pixels and cookies. This involves:

1. Implementation of pixels and cookies

Pixel Placement: A small piece of JavaScript code (tracking pixel or tag) is installed on the website.

User Tracking: When someone visits your site, the pixel places a cookie in their browser, anonymously tracking their behavior: pages visited, products viewed, time spent on the site, interactions, and so on.

2. Audience Segmentation and Profiles

Behavioral Data: The information collected is used to segment users based on their interactions: those who viewed a specific product category, added something to their cart, or consumed certain content.

Personalization: That data is used to build audience lists for ads tailored to the user's previous actions.

3. Distribution and Advertising Network

Integration with networks: Ads are displayed through the Google Display Network, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other programmatic channels.

Cross-channel: Users can be exposed to the brand on social media, blogs, videos, and mobile apps, ensuring a consistent brand presence.

4. Types of Retargeting

Static retargeting: Displays a generic ad to all users in a segment (for example, a 10% coupon for everyone who abandoned their cart).

Dynamic retargeting: Displays hyper-personalized ads based on the user's exact browsing history (for example: the same TV they left in their cart, with free shipping).

5. Campaign Optimization

Burn pixel: Exclude users who have already made a purchase to avoid ad fatigue and wasted ad spend.

Testing and Optimization: Ongoing testing of messages, formats, frequency, and creative assets to maximize conversions and ROI.

Levels of Engagement in Retargeting

In an advanced strategy, not all audiences are the same. We can work in tiers:

Proprietary lists: customer databases and registration emails.

Users who have interacted with previous ads.

Followers or people who interact with posts on social media.

Users who watched videos.

People who specifically interacted with videos or forms.

Each level has a different value and requires tailored messages, resulting in a more efficient retargeting funnel.

+

Retargeting Psychology = Results

The Familiarity Effect explains why it works: the more we see something, the more trust it inspires.

It takes between 6 and 20 touchpoints for a consumer to take action (HubSpot, 2024).

Retargeting can increase conversions by up to 147% (99Firms, 2024).

70% of consumers are more likely to convert after being re-engaged (Cometly, 2025).

+

The special case of abandoned carts…

According to the Baymard Institute (2024), nearly 70% of online purchases are abandoned before checkout is completed. With retargeting, you can:

Remember the exact product.

Add a sense of urgency (“Only 3 left”).

Offer an incentive (a coupon or free shipping).

This can recover between 10% and 15% of sales that were previously considered lost.

+

Why can't just anyone do it?

Retargeting requires:

Precise technical configuration of pixels, tags, and events.

Integration with multiple advertising platforms.

Smart segmentation to avoid wasted impressions.

Creative assets tailored to each stage of the funnel.

Constant monitoring for real-time adjustments.

+

Legal and Compliance Considerations

The implementation of retargeting campaigns involves the use of cookies and tracking technologies that collect browsing data.

Due to regulations such as the GDPR (EU) and the CCPA (California), as well as best practices for transparency, the following is recommended:

Display a clear and visible cookie notice.

Explain what types of cookies are used (technical, analytical, marketing).

Allow users to accept or reject cookies based on their preferences.

Include the use of data for retargeting in the privacy policy.

At Alterno Agency, we recommend implementing a Cookie Consent Manager that complies with regulations and ensures transparency and trust with users.
