Social media strategy for businesses in Puerto Rico: a getting-started guide

A useful strategy connects what we publish with what the business needs to achieve, not the pressure to be on every platform.

Start with a business decision

To build a social media strategy, first define what you need to achieve: awareness, website visits, inquiries, appointments or sales. Choose one primary goal for the first cycle and decide how you will record related actions. Posting more does not replace clear direction.

Illustrative example: a service provider might prioritize quote requests; a store might focus on orders. Each goal needs appropriate content, a call to action and a destination. These are not client results or performance promises.

Identify who you want to reach

Describe your audience by need, municipality or service area, language, questions and buying process. Puerto Rico is not a uniform audience. Review conversations, incoming questions and available data to build a hypothesis you can refine.

In B2C, a person usually decides for themselves or their household. In B2B, users, buyers and budget owners may participate. Business suppliers need to explain processes and purchasing criteria; stores can show uses, availability and delivery. These are guidelines, not absolute rules.

+

Choose platforms based on audience and capacity

  • Facebook: communities, business information and local conversations.
  • Instagram: visual products, demonstrations, Stories and messages.
  • TikTok: useful videos and discovery with platform-adapted content.
  • LinkedIn: professional relationships, specialized knowledge and B2B decisions.

You do not need to start everywhere. Prioritize one or two platforms where audience, goal and response capacity overlap. Review relevant reach, visits and inquiries. Popularity alone does not prove a channel fits your business.

+

Organize pillars and a sustainable frequency

Define pillars: education, products or services, processes, FAQs and community. Each post should address a specific need. Explaining what a service includes may be more useful than repeating messages about quality.

An illustrative starting point could be two or three weekly posts with time reserved for replies. Adjust frequency to resources, not a universal rule. Turn pillars into tasks with our 30-day content calendar.

+

Combine photography, video, Reels and Stories

Prepare clear photographs of products, spaces and processes. Present one idea per video and take care with audio and captions. A Reel can demonstrate a use, a carousel compare options and Stories answer questions or share current information. See the social media sizes guide.

Confirm rights to music, images and other assets. Obtain permission before publishing identifiable people. Do not conceal important conditions or turn an example into a testimonial that never happened.

+

Organic content and paid advertising serve different purposes

Organic content maintains a presence and conversation, but distribution is not guaranteed. Advertising buys distribution under each platform’s options and policies. Define goal, audience, budget and destination before promoting.

+

Manage community and make the next step easy

Assign responsibility for comments, messages, published response hours and escalation. Do not request sensitive information publicly. Acknowledge complaints and move personal details to an appropriate channel without promising unconfirmed solutions.

Make it easy to check availability, book or visit a specific page. Test links and forms on mobile. For website visits, pair this strategy with how to attract website traffic.

+

Measure beyond likes

Connect reach to distribution, saves to usefulness, clicks to interest and qualified inquiries or sales to business outcomes. Distinguish clicks from sessions and followers from customers. Tag links and record inquiry sources while respecting privacy.

Avoid buying followers, copying trends without context or evaluating everything through reactions. Compare equivalent periods and document promotions, inventory and budgets. An isolated change does not prove a post caused a sale.
